Free, open-source JavaScript library by Meta for building user interfaces. Component-based architecture with virtual DOM. Foundation behind Next.js and Remix. Powers millions of production apps. React 19 adds Server Components and React Compiler. Completely free and open source.

Strengths

Largest ecosystem and community of any UI library
Server Components and Compiler keep it at the cutting edge
Build faster than starting from scratch
Backed by Meta and used by millions of production apps

Weaknesses

Requires developer expertise — not a business tool
React alone is just UI — need additional tools for routing, state, data
Frequent API changes create learning curve
JSX syntax takes time for developers from other paradigms

Key features

Component-based architecture for reusable UI pieces
Virtual DOM updates only what changes for fast performance
React 19: Server Components, Compiler, and improved hooks
Massive ecosystem with thousands of libraries and tools
Powers Next.js, Remix, and Gatsby for full-stack development

STOA verdict

React is built for software developers, not small business owners — if you don't have a developer on your team, this tool isn't for you. The good news is it's completely free and powers some of the best web apps in the world. The catch is that you need real coding skills to use it, so most small businesses are better off with a no-code tool like Webflow or Squarespace instead.
