What it does

Open-source product analytics combining event tracking, session recordings, feature flags, A/B testing, and error monitoring. All-in-one with unlimited team members and usage-based pricing with hard spending caps. Free: 1M events, 5K replays/month. Usage-based after that. Self-host free.

Strengths

Incredibly generous free tier — 1M events, 5K replays
All-in-one replaces analytics, recording, feature flags, A/B testing, surveys
Unlimited team members on every plan — no per-seat pricing
Open-source with self-hosting for full data control
Usage-based with hard caps — no surprise bills

Weaknesses

Steeper learning curve than simpler analytics tools
Self-hosting requires DevOps knowledge
Some advanced features cost extra
UI can feel overwhelming with so many products bundled

Key features

Event-based analytics with custom dashboards
Session recordings show where users get stuck
Feature flags and A/B testing built in
Error monitoring with stack traces
User surveys tied to specific pages or actions

AI features

PostHog includes an AI assistant called Max that lets you ask plain-language questions about your product data and get instant answers. It also uses AI to help surface insights and patterns in user behavior without requiring you to build custom reports.

STOA verdict

PostHog is best for small tech-savvy teams who want to understand how people use their product without paying for five separate tools. You get event tracking, session recordings, A/B testing, and more in one place — and the free tier covers up to 1 million events per month, which is generous. The downside is that setup takes real technical effort, so if you don't have a developer on your team, you'll likely struggle to get full value out of it.
